Getting to know Julia & Holle

Holle Schlickmann and Julia Schaetz
1. Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)
We are Julia Schaetz and Holle Schlickmann. Julia (29) graduated in Fashion Design in 2010 from the ABK Maastricht. After her graduation she did a 10-month advanced training as pattern cutter for Women’s wear at"Müller&Sohn" in Düsseldorf. Holle (24) currently studies Fashion Design in her 3rd year at the Design Department in Düsseldorf and focuses on Menswear.

2. Tell us a little bit about the concept behind your collection
The idea behind our collection was to create clothes that suit the kind of nomadic lifestyle that becomes more and more popular at the moment. People travel/move around a lot and live out of their suitcases. So we created minimal outfits with attention to small details that are repeated within the whole collection and keep the men and women outfits together. All garments can be combined with each other and can be dressed up or dressed down easily. Furthermore, we wanted to show our view on modern gender roles and play with traditional expectations. So our women’s wear is much more tailored than the menswear which has a softer feel to it. But all in all we didn't want to make a conceptual collection, for us fashion is much more about emotion and the creation of a certain feeling than the realization of a specific concept.

3. What does the name “ZWEI” say about your collection?
The collection we are going to show at FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2012 is our first mutual collection (and it was the first time for both of us that we teamed up with someone else) so we decided to simply give it the name "Zwei" which is German for two.

4. Why did you decide to work together as Julia&Holle?
We met by chance over a mutual friend in Düsseldorf in 2011 and during a long night at Holle`s kitchen table we figured out that we share the same taste and vision in fashion, arts and culture, and immediately felt the need to try working together. So FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2012 was the perfect opportunity to start our first mutual project. It was actually so much fun that we are going to work together on new projects in the future.

5. What made you decide to put a mixed collection together?
Because Julia is specialized in Women’s wear and Holle is specialized in Menswear it was more a logical conclusion than a decision to put a mixed collection together.

6. If you were to describe your collection in 3 words which ones would you choose?
 Minimalistic, vanguard, modern

7. How do you personally define „fashionclash“ or „ a clash with fashion“ for yourself?
For us FASHIONCLASH is a unique platform for different designers, artists etc. from different backgrounds that come up with different ideas, inspiration etc. to share their visions with each other and the world. To sum up, we would say it is pure excitement without any limits or force behind it.
