The Art of Aging

The concept of ‘age’ is the theme of the 6th edition of the FASHIONCLASH Festival.

Age is omnipresent in our society. It is a multi-layered concept and widely discussed. It seems that we could debate endlessly what aging means in the 21st century. There is the societal debate concerning the aging population in Western countries. What can be done to the evident age gap between the old and the young? What kind of actions can be done to prevent the isolation of elderly people in society? The developed health care system means that people will live longer and are able to stay active longer. There is the value debate concerning the adoration of youth, which contrasts the appreciation and respect we often show towards the elderly people. What will be the role of elderly people in the modern society? Has the modern-day obsession with youth made us formulate certain beliefs concerning appropriate behaviour for elderly people? Some say it is inappropriate for an older woman to show off skin. Whatever is your position in the debate concerning age, it is something that you can relate to. Have you ever considered, for example, how does your age translate to your actions and the way you express yourself? Often it is claimed that certain designs are representative of a certain age only, but is it really so? Equally, art and design provide a number of means to break down boundaries that are related to the stereotypes concerning age. Fashion is capable of discussing whether certain types of clothes are limited to a specific age or how age can be implemented in design.

Open Call for VERWEVEN 2014

Open call for designers for project VERWEVEN 2014 by Theatre Performer Nina Willems

Since few years FASHIONCLASH has been working with theatre performer Nina Willems.

For the 2013 edition of FASHIONCLASH festival Nina created the concept for the special VERWEVEN Project. In the years to come, FASHIONCLASH will continue to collaborate with Nina Willems to realize the project “VERWEVEN”. In this project, we will tell the stories of ordinary people behind the clothes they wear. We ask them to show us their wardrobe and interview them about their lives and the importance of fashion in it. This will result in a series of short films about the influence of fashion on their daily lives.

OPEN CALL for designers for VERWEVEN
We would like to have a new outfit designed for each person that we interviewed. Therefore we are looking for 5 designers who see this as a challenge! Your challange is to create a new outfit for this person, inspired on the stories he/she tells in the film. To combine your own style as a designers with their style and stories. And to create a brand new piece that tells new story. There are no rules for your design, apart from the fact that it must be wearable on the catwalk. We are open for experimental ideas and designs.

EXPOSURE 
Your outfit will be shown on the catwalk during the FASHIONCLASH festival 2014 (13 - 15 June). It will be shown by the person you designed it for. In addition to the show, the outfit will be exhibited in the FASHIONCLASH exhibtion at the main venue.
On the website of VERWEVEN (currently in development) you will have your own page with information about you as a designer, professional photo’s of your design and photo’s of the FASHIONCLASH Festival.

Furthermore the purpose of VERWEVEN project is to travel to other festivals and exhibitions and in that context your work may be part of many events to come.

project by Sara Vrugt at Oude Kerk in Amsterdam

Artist Sara Vrugt creates large-scale embroidery installations. From November 15 Sara will work for several months in the church atelier together with local residents, passers-by, tourists, and prostitutes on an installation for the Oude Kerk. 118 church seats from the Oude Kerk will form part of the exhibition. Her ambition is not only to create art collaboratively but also to make topical issues visible and open for discussion. The red light district on the square of the Oude Kerk has been a lively topic of conversation since the initiation five years ago of the 1012 project to reduce drugs and prostitution. Through this participatory embroidery project we take stock and discuss the changing role of the Oude Kerk in the city and its significance for the individual.

Sara Vrugt at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014
Sara is one of the participant in Distinguished Dreams project, where she is collaborating with choreographer Cecilia Moisio. Distinguished Dreams is a special collaboration with the Dutch Dance Festival.

FASHIONCLASH at FEE Academy Finals


Last weekend FEE Academy Finals took place at hotel Merici in Sittard.
The jury panel, consisted of Kiki Niesten, Hadewych Minis, Chequita Nahar, Garderone +, FASHIONCLASH, had a very tough task to choose three winners out of eight talents.

Congratulations to FEE Academy winners: Jet Teunis, Mirte Engelhard & Ine de Haes.

Among the eight finalists there where several FASHIONCLASH Festival participants like Jolka Wiens, Joelle Boers, Sabine Staartjes and one of the winner Arhnem based designer Mirte Engelhard who participated at FASHIONCLASH Festival in 2012 in collaboration with Nikki Giling.

To celebrate arrival of his new collection at Kiki Niesten, Dutch designer Antoine Peters created a sweater with the world's longest sleeves. At this moment he took over Kiki Niesten store with an installation in the window display.
It leads to an unofficial world record, while an application to the Guinness Book of Records is still ongoing. Among the sweater with the longest sleeves you can find his new collection. Several pieces are marked with an qoute by René Magritte 'Ceci n’est pas un sweater'.

Since the very first edition of our festival, FASHIONCLASH had the honor to work with MAC Cosmetics. Beside their stunning work their team of stylists is a wonderful group of people who know how to combine fun and work.

For the 6th edition of our annual festival, FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014 we have chosen to work with the theme of AGE. The exhibition will be curated around this theme and we working on a inspiring project 'Old(Fashioned) with the Dutch Dance Festival.
